Africover Data

In this area it is possible to access the metadata and download the Geographic data produced by the the Africover Project and the participating countries.

The information available in the national Multipurpose Africover Databases on Environmental Resources (MADE) is composed by a main geographic information layer (i.e. land cover) and several additional layers that vary for each country (e.g. roads, rivers and water bodies, etc.); the available data produced by Africover is listed for each country in the Africover Data table (here only full resolution data sets and public domain spatially aggregated data sets are listed. Thematic aggregations are available starting from the metadata of these data sets).

The NFPI data table contains data sets developed and published by the NFPIs.

The data warehouses available are listed in the Data Warehouses and additional data tables.

If you are interested in accessing the data, please first examine the metadata of the specific data set you are interested in. Afterwards you will be able to proceed to access the data with the appropriate procedure.

If you are not yet registered you can fill in the registration form once you will proceed to download a data set; you will receive an e-mail with user name and password to log in the system and download the data set you requested.

If you are already a registered user please can log in the system; you can access this page and directly download the data you need or submit requests for the full resolution data or custom aggregations without having to register again.

Please consult the data access policies that rule the access to the different types of data sets.

You can also browse the on line version of the Africover data sets through our web mapping.

It is essential for a proper correct use of Data Set to consult the Technical Insight section.

The following subsection are indispensable:

LCCS

This subsection gives the users an overview of the basic land cover classification system used to create the thematic classes.

Cartographic Standard

This subsection allows the users to understand the cartographic standard applied in database creation. Particularly important is to deep understand the “mixed unit” concept.

Inside MADE

This subsection provides the full overview of the database structure.

Each data base is completed by a document that explains how to understand and use the data base; it contains also the legend and the statistics required to optimize its use. See an example of MADE documentation.

Aggregation

This subsection guides the users to all the actions performed to spatially aggregate the Data Set.
